For the past 15 years, The Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance has presented the Bronx’s only consistent celebration during gay pride month - The OUT LIKE THAT! Festival at BAAD!
For this milestone year, BAAD! opens the festival at the former Bronx County Courthouse as part of the NO LONGER EMPTY project there and will team up with the celebrated Bronx cartoonist, Ivan Velez, to present one of the biggest gay pride in the Bronx’s history on June 5th.
The festival moves to BAAD!’s home at 2474 Westchester Avenue and continue through Friday, June 26, 2015 with a fierce line-up of dance, theatre, and wonderful performances featuring queer Bronx artists including Elizabeth “Macha” Marrero’s new show WHOLLY MACHA, events by Bronx choreographers Richard Rivera and Ni’Ja Whitson, and a closing night dance concert celebrating dance diva Sylvester and Gender Freedom. BAAD! the Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance teams up with award-winning Bronx cartoonist Ivan Velez and his classic Drink-n-Draw event to kick off LGBTQ pride month in the Bronx. This large queer pride art and performance carnival assembles over 50 dancers, models, artists and performers, and a live DJ to deliver a spectacle for the senses and beats to keep your mind and body grooving in a cavernous room inside the historic former Bronx County Courthouse - the latest project of No Longer Empty. In The Life Ministries will be on hand to officiate queer marriage vows (the first and last time in the courthouse).

The award-winning actress/comedienne/drag king, Elizabeth “Macha” Marrero, returns to BAAD!’s stage with her first solo show in years with her beloved characters Petronelia, Willy Gűiso Jugo, Dicky DooLittle, and others averting life's curve balls with humor and fierce ghetto flava. This new monthly initiative at BAAD! celebrates young LGBTQ people with an event that begins with an art/ culture presentation followed by an open mic, dance off (with a two $25 prizes) and an after-party. This month’s offering will include short gay films and the coming out scene from the TV show Empire.

Bronx-based choreographer Richard Rivera, who was recently granted a Pepatian/BAAD! Open Call Artist Residency presents new work in progress. Audience members are invited into the intimate creative process as Richard shows and shares dances he is preparing for a show in November.

N'IJA WHITSON in When Water Dries the Mouth: Experiments & Suite Prayers
The award-winning Bronx-based Dancer/Choreographer/Artists Ni'Ja Whitson / The NWA Project will present a culminating event of a year-long inquiry into the Divine in ritual, religion, sexuality, and sex. While investigating the corrosive and subversive powers of institutionalized religion, this evening of experiments, statements, and prayers draws upon the complicated legacies of Queer, Black, and African Indigenous expressions of/toward salvation.

Celebrating SYLVESTER and Gender Freedom: The Out Like That! Dance Concert
Through the power and verve of dance, this shared bill of choreographers express celebrate the dance diva Sylvester and gender freedom through works that either use his music or express their ideas of gender freedom with Kharis Collins, Filip A. Condeescu, Jessica Danser, Laritza Dumont, Alvaro González Dupuy, Arturo Lyons’ Da New Breed, Brandin Steffensen, Lorenzo Walker II and Vivika Westwood.
