SIRENS AND DIVAS
SIRENS AND QUEENS
Soprano, Anqwenique Wingfield presents contemporary works by Black Women composers and performers, highlighting their accomplishments in classical music, jazz and soul. This program aims to explore non-sacred, obscure works that are not performed often in order to expose, educate, entertain and delight audiences in stories and musical experiences that although universal, are not included in standard classical repertoire. Dorothy Rudd Moore, Florence Price, Ella Fitzgerald, Leontyne Price, Jill Scott are amongst the performers and composers who inspire this performance.
Multidisciplinary performer Karma Mayet Johnson has shared her 21st century Roots sound across the U.S. and internationally, working with artists including Meshell Ndegeocello, Bill T. Jones, Toshi Reagon, Burnt Sugar, Vernon Reid, and The Roots. She is composer/librettist of Indigo, a Blues opera. Poems have appeared in Nocturnes (re)view of the literary arts, Cave Canem’s Gathering Ground, and elsewhere. Her newest collection, entitled Rootwoman, is scheduled for release in the Spring of 2016. She’s the creator of the Rootsong™ system, a unique approach to vocal attunement that gets to the root of your sound by accessing the root of your being.
JIDAH performs songs from her unreleased Wave EP, that was recorded at Converse Rubber Track Studios in Brooklyn, and will be out in August 2016. Join her on this interactive baptism, in a sea of warm and healing vocals, experience a Wave of emotions ranging from heartbreak to rebirth.
